The DHS has increased its email surveillance, all while continuing to hoard enough ammo to murder everyone on the planet twice. This is the part where intelligent Americans begin to feel slight unease at the fact that an ambiguous and unconstitutional government agency seems to be engaged in an old school, militaristic power grab. Neo-liberals are also, no doubt, concerned… That Obama still might not have enough of an ability to control and kill us.
Of course, as you know, we passed through some sort of strange galactic wormhole in 2008 and when we came out the other side, left wingers were suddenly shrugging their shoulders and saying “eh, on second thought, screw the Bill of Rights”.
I always enjoy conversing with an Obama supporter who assumes that I’m like him, and so my positions must fluctuate and fade according to the whims of a political party. I enjoy it because it amuses me, not because it’s productive in anyway. In fact, debating an Obama cultist is like playing hide-and-seek with a 4 year old. You can’t win. Your opponent will change the rules, or even the game, halfway through. When you box him into a corner he’ll just run around in circles, cry, crap himself and accuse you of cheating. Then he’ll go back to eating graham crackers and watching cartoons and you’ll walk away feeling an odd mix of superiority and frustration.
That’s why you’ve no doubt failed in any attempt to get a neo-liberal to explain his continued support for Obama in spite of the president’s constant and sustained assault on civil liberties. Posed with that quandary, the neo-liberal has one move, and one move only. It’s like his hadouken in Street Fighter: Obfuscate the issue by attempting to paint you as a Bush loving, establishment Republican, Sean Hannity groupie. This is one of the reasons why it’s important for you to not be a Bush loving, establishment Republican, Sean Hannity groupie. I don’t know anyone under the age of 50 who is, but there are a few out there. And they are sick individuals.
Here’s my impression of every conversation I’ve ever had with an Obama supporter on the subject of civil liberties (or on any other subject for that matter):
Me: How do you justify Obama’s latest assault on the 4th amendment?
Obama Cultist: Well you were OK with it when BUSH did it!
Me: No I wasn’t, actually. I didn’t vote for Bush and I don’t like him or support him. Now, back to the subject, how do you-
OC: What, did you hear about this on your precious FOX NEWS?!
Me: No I don’t really watch cable news. I get most of my information from the internet rather than TV or newspapers. If you’d like to take a look at my internet history I can show you my news and information sources, otherwise I’d appreciate it if we could get back to the topic at hand. Obama has recently-
OC: Well, uh, MY BODY MY CHOICE.
Me: … Um, what? We aren’t talking about abortion, we’re talking about the Department of Homeland Security and its-
OC: RELIGION IS THE SOURCE OF ALL EVIL.
Me: Huh? If you’re going to simply read bumper stickers can you at least read ones that are relevant to the topic at hand? The topic which is-
OC: REPUBLICANS HATE POOR PEOPLE.
Me: I’m not a Republican but none of this has any relevance to-
OC: THE RICH SHOULD PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE.
Me: … OK. I’m just gonna go away now.
OC: HA! See?! YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
And then he goes back to the couch and you go back to work and nothing is resolved and the country inches closer to self inflicted destruction. God bless America.
